In past elections, voters have expressed the desire to have a single website to gather information about the candidates.  It wasn't important to create a separate website, since there were only 2 or 3 candidates in the previous elections.  However, there are now 6 candidates competing in the upcoming special election on August 26th to become the next county commissioner for District 1.

Many voters have expressed concern about future growth.  Although the candidates all claim they want to keep District 1 rural, how can we be sure of their promises?

In the past, Cherokee County had candidates for commissioner in other districts who pledged to follow the land use plan for slow or responsible growth. Once they were elected, they proceeded to rubber-stamp high-density developments in rural areas.  Cherokee County experienced a 50 percent increase in population during their time in office due to the developments they approved.  Over the last 15 years, the population of the county has increased by about 5 percent each year, with only 2 percent or less occurring in the unincorporated area. Most of the growth has occurred in the cities.

There are candidates who make promises that are either impossible or illegal.   They are either uninformed regarding the role of a county commissioner, or they are intentionally telling you what you want to hear to gain your vote.

When selecting a candidate to vote for, consider their motivation.  What is driving their interest in becoming your commissioner?  Are they seeking perceived power, owning land they want to develop, having friends who want to develop, or seeking insurance benefits?

The increase in population here in Cherokee County has changed the role from a part-time position to a full-time position with part-time pay.

We have investigated public records to provide you with any positive or negative information we found about each of the candidates.  Choosing who to vote for is a personal decision. We hope this website serves as a valuable resource to assist you in making an informed decision.

It is important to mention that no one commissioner can make a decision on their own, every decision requires a majority vote (3 of 5).
